Learning how to teach online can be a game changer. Are you looking for a work at home job that won’t keep you tied to a desk all day? Teach online. Thank goodness we live in an age where online learning is possible. Such creates an opportunity for teachers and regular people, like you and me, to share what they know in a relaxed environment that allows students to work at their own pace. While many hard academic courses can be taught online, you can just as easily teach courses like how to write children’s books, how to train your cat or even how to start a blog or a website.

Some work from home teaching jobs do require a bachelors degree or higher, but you can just as easily teach online with no experience at all! It’s an open landscape for anyone looking to share information and knowledge on a part-time or full-time basis. In many instances, courses are prerecorded, which means you can create a course one time and continue to earn an income from it for years on end!

Self-Publishing For Profit

You may have only come here to view our expanding directory of work at home jobs for moms, but if you’ve got writing talent you’re on the brink of discovering an entirely new career: self-publishing. As the popularity of ebook readers like Amazon’s Kindle or Barnes & Noble’s Nook continues to rise, so does the popularity of ebooks. With growing consumer demand for content, writers with an interest in self-publishing are finding this to be a lucrative avenue, indeed.

Did you know that in less than a week’s time you can publish your own ebook and begin earning a profit from online sales? With quality writing and strong marketing, some authors are making thousands of extra dollars each month from ebook sales. Of course, not everyone is finding the same success, as results on these things always vary. But then, on the other hand, some authors aren’t just making thousands per month, they’re actually making several thousand dollars per day!

While you may think that self-publishing is a difficult task too far beyond your reach, our research tells us just the opposite. According to those who have been there and done that, the actual process of self-publishing on Kindle or other ebook outlets isn’t too difficult at all. Furthermore, a lot of authors who’ve had previous book deals with established publishing houses are finding that, in a lot of ways, they actually prefer self-publishing.

And, no, you do not have to be a well-known author in order to find success on one of these venues. And, no, you don’t have to set your books at a high price in order to earn a profit. In fact, some of the authors that are finding the most success with online publishing were previously unknown and– get this, they are making a killing selling .99 cent books!

If you don’t believe me, take a look at some of the authors who’ve found notable success via online publishing:

Amanda Hocking

J.A. Konrath

Zoe Winters

H.P. Mallory

And, folks, this is just a tiny sampling of the authors who’ve carved lucrative careers for themselves in online publishing.

If you’ve ever thought about writing a book (fiction or non-fiction), you owe it to yourself to look closely into the possibilities of self-publishing. While at one time doing so held a certain stigma, those who understand how digital technology is rapidly changing the publishing landscape also understand that, while print will (hopefully) never be obsolete, consumers have spoken and guess what they said? Ebooks rock!

One final thought before we send you away with a few links for further exploration; you do not have to own a Kindle, a Nook, an iPad or any other type of reading device to begin a self-publishing career. You don’t even necessarily have to read other people’s books on these devices if you’re curious to check a few out before you take the plunge (you can actually download a Kindle app right to your computer and read from there, and there are lots of other places that sell ebooks that can be read on your computer). So, if you’ve ever toyed with the idea of self-publishing before, we want you to know that this is an excellent work at home career choice.

Guest Post: Try Etsy For Work At Home Jobs For Moms by Lisa Shoreland

Why search for work at home jobs for moms when you can create your own? Today’s guest post, brought to us by Lisa Shoreland, is one that you don’t want to miss if you’re into crafting or if you know someone who is.

Work at Home with Etsy

When it comes to working, the enlightened advice always seems to be, “Do what you love.”  Unfortunately, people believe that they don’t have the luxury to do so (many of them are right), and opportunities for moms to work at home seem lacking.  If you love to craft, however, Etsy may be able to help turn you from a crafty mom to a work-at-home mom.

For those of you who have yet to discover Etsy, my advice is to go there now and see the wonder for yourself.  It’s a charming website that gives anyone who tries an equal opportunity to work from home and sell their wares to people across the world.  Your wares—be they clothing, candles, accessories, or even baked goods—sell based on who wants them.  This means you’ll have to do your part in advertising to improve your chances of sales, too.

Do you knit or crochet?  Do you make jewelry?  Do you sew?  Can you make soap or lotion?  Are you well-versed in web or graphic design?  Are you a photographer?  Do you want to work from home?  Consider selling your products or services on Etsy.

If you’re met with a positive response, you might even go through your neighborhood and inquire local boutiques if they’d like to sell your wares.  Having a successful Etsy store may give you increased credibility.

Preparing For Business

Becoming a work-at-home mom via Etsy isn’t just about crafting, though.  You’ll need the following materials to successfully advertise, present, and send off your wares to buyers.

  • A computer to access Etsy and communicate with buyers
  • A camera to take well-lit, clear, and high-quality photographs of your wares, which you will upload via computer onto your Etsy store
  • An inventory of products already made to present to potential buyers
  • A business plan to keep you on track with your goals.  How much money do you hope to make?  What is your spending budget?  Who are you selling to?  How will you advertise your business?
  • Enough funds for the monthly membership fee for owning a store on Etsy (generally under $20 a month).  The site has a built-in shopping cart system and payment/fulfillment structure.
  • Access to transportation to the post office, as you will be shipping your products out to people across the country yourself.

Marketing Your Business

  • Evaluate other Etsy stores.  Which ones are popular and what do they sell?  What are other stores selling similar items to yours?  What’s working and what’s not?
  • Choose a niche.  As with blogs, it’s easier to market your business if you do or sell something specific, like painting or photography (but likely not both).
  • Make a memorable logo and store name.  If you’re having trouble with these, you can browse Etsy for people who will do this for you.  Some will even design and print your business cards.  Luckily, most reputable Etsy storeowners are prompt on shipping (something for you to heavily consider when opening your business).
  • Advertise on other forms of social media, like your Facebook page or Twitter feed.  If you have a blog, be sure to add a link to your Etsy store.  Hand out your business card to friends and family like candy on Halloween.
  • Don’t expect to make it big at once.  As with any work-at-home opportunity, success will likely be slow and gradual.  The harder you work and the more avenues you push, however, the sooner and bigger success will arrive.

Bio: Lisa Shoreland is currently a resident blogger at Go College, where recently she’s been researching physicians assistant scholarships as well as occupational therapy scholarships. In her spare time, she enjoys creative writing, practicing martial arts, and taking weekend trips.

The 411 on the InfoBarrel Income Opportunity ~ A Guest Post by Chris Hinton

The Problem

Over the decade I’ve worked with dozens of friends and family in an attempt to help them build a passive income stream using the Internet.  Throughout these attempts I’ve noticed two common problems.

Problem #1

People are very optimistic with the idea of making money online, however when they don’t see instant gratification and coupled with the monetary and time investments required in maintaining and promoting a web site, most people tend to quit before they ever start seeing any income.

Problem #2

Because it is human nature to get instant gratification, people tend to spend less time on the things they don’t know much about and wind up producing something that provides no end value to their users.  The web site winds up being covered in ads essentially dragging down the overall quality of the Internet instead of making it better.

By not creating value for end users, regardless of how much time you spend marketing, it will be nearly impossible to create return visitors and even harder to get people talking about your web site or business.

The Solution

Create a space where users would not have to be burdened with the financial costs of owning, maintaining and marketing a website and could simply focus on producing quality content to share with the world while still earning a substantial passive income.  By removing these problems we hope to increase the quality of content found on the internet and making it once again a safe place to find information.

In July 2008, with these ideals in mind InfoBarrel was born.

How it Works

InfoBarrel is a shared revenue crowd sourced community.  Essentially what that means, is the content of the site is entirely created by the users who frequent the site.  To compensate writers, we provide them with a minimum of 75% of the advertising impressions from Google Adsense, Chitika and Amazon.  We also have an escalating revenue share percentage that allows writers to earn up to 90% revenue share if they hit certain criteria.

There is no cost to the writer, and the site has had extensive marketing time invested into it resulting in great organic search engine results.  To date we have many writers making over $100 a month and a few making over $1000.  InfoBarrel has become one of the top destinations to earn money writing on the Internet.  Because of our passionate users and extensive marketing plan InfoBarrel has grown from a small site consisting of a few users to a thriving community with 31,000+ members that is growing on a daily basis.  We are also very dedicated to supporting our writer community by allowing them to personally email us with any issues that they may have encountered while at the site.  With one of our goals being to improve the quality of material found on the internet InfoBarrel also manually approves all new article submissions checking them for article quality and duplicate content among many other factors. The site been touted as the next best revenue sharing site by popular web entrepreneur Pat Flynn.

Why it’s Great for Work at Home Moms

Because of the opportunity to generate money while working from home, we have had an enormous surge of WAHMs publishing on InfoBarrel.  Since InfoBarrel requires much less of a commitment than running your own website, mothers are able to sit down and write an article when they have a free moment before returning to their busy lives.  We have a number of successful WAHMs most notably MommyMommyMommy.

Community

One of the things that I am most proud of in terms on InfoBarrel is how supportive our community has become.  The InfoBarrel Writers’ Community is one of the most tight knit, friendly groups of people online.  If you need advice on how to do something, even extremely simple, the community is there to help and there is never a stupid question.

Success Stories

InfoBarrel has been around for just over two years now and has already garnered several success stories, with at least two members making over $1000 a month, and a number of users making over $100.

The following are  just a few success stories of members:

JCMayer ($1000+ /moth now)

Travis_Aitch ($1000+ /month now)

ChezFat ($500+ /month now)

The Work at Home Mom Center’s Tips for Avoiding Work From Home Burnout

Working from home has its privileges, but it also has its pitfalls. One of the largest drawbacks of telecommuting is the tendency to burnout after too many days of the same lonesome routine. This is particularly true for work from home opportunities performed online where there is minimal human interaction. Another drawback is the formation of unhealthy habits, such as unhealthy snacking and developing a sedentary lifestyle, which contributes to unhealthy weight gain, fatigue and poor health.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid work from home burnout:

1. Exercise ~ Engaging in daily exercise doesn’t mean that you have to join an expensive gym or spend hours sweating instead of working. However, it is important that you remember to stretch at regular intervals and engage in some sort of cardiovascular exercise for at least thirty minutes per day. To achieve this, try taking a brisk morning walk around your neighborhood before you begin working or find a yoga DVD to help you wind down after a long day at the computer.

2. Avoid Unhealthy Snacking ~ Working at home means that the kitchen is always just a few feet away. Often, this leads to extra snacking, which leads to fatigue and unhealthy weight gain. To avoid this, be sure to eat three balanced meals throughout the day. As a general rule, don’t bring tempting processed foods, sugary drinks or other unhealthy snacks into your home. Instead, stock your kitchen with fresh fruits and vegetables, and keep a healthy supply of these prepped and close to your workstation while working. Also remember that dehydration is often mistaken for hunger, so if you find yourself hungry between meals, try drinking more water.

3. Keep a Regular Schedule ~ Unless you work for an employer that schedules your shifts for you, working from home means that your time is pretty much your own. While this sounds like the life, be aware that it can also be a bane…particularly if you tend to overwork yourself or fail to structure your day in such a way that you’re able to keep up with all of your duties. Avoid this by keeping a regular work schedule. This doesn’t mean that you have to work an eight hour workday, only that a little structure will help you maintain balance while making sure you remain productive.

4. Take Breaks ~ When deciding your work schedule, be sure to take breaks at regular intervals. It’s a good idea to set a timer to be sure that you’re not overdoing it. Time has a tendency to fly when you’re deeply engrossed in a task and it’s not unusual to sit for hours at a time staring at a computer screen. While you may think this is a good thing because you’re getting the job done, the toll that these long stretches take on your eyesight, your circulation and your overall health is not worth it. Instead, be sure to take at least one ten-minute break per hour. Even better, set a timer to remind you to stop working every thirty minutes and take a ten-minute stretch or walk around the house (or outdoors if it’s a nice day).

5. Unplug for a Day ~ Forget making jack a dull boy, all work and no play will drive mama nuts! Perhaps one of the best things that you can do for yourself and your sanity is to completely unplug for an entire day. Do not power your computer up, do not worry about checking or responding to emails and don’t even think about making business calls. Instead, take a day to enjoy your family or just to nurture your own Spirit. In doing so, you’ll feel rejuvenated, refreshed and better capable of tackling your work tasks when you reconnect.

6. Find Outdoor Activities ~ Working from home often creates more free time, but unfortunately, it also creates workaholics who rarely take the time to stop and smell the roses. You, of course, will not fall into this trap, as you are going to make it a point to seek outdoor activities that you can enjoy alone or with your family on a regular basis. Not only is this good for your mental health, but it’s good for your physical health, as well. We all need a daily dose of vitamin D, of which the sun’s rays are our best source. For this reason, be sure that at least one of your daily breaks includes a minimum of twenty minutes of outdoor sunlight when possible. And, yes, you still need to wear a sunscreen! (By the way, if your home office has a window, please be sure you’re wearing sunscreen to work every day. Even indirect sunlight filtered through a window can contain harmful UV rays.)

7. Change Your Scenery ~ Working from home can be exciting, relaxing and a welcomed change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. However, after staring at the four walls of your home office day in and day out, it can also become as monotonous as the cubicle life you used to live. Avoid this by changing your scenery every once in a while. One of the perks of working from home is that you can also work just about anywhere else. Make use of this privilege by working from a local coffee shop, library or other location offering Wi-Fi. Be sure to bring your earbuds and favorite MP3s to block out the sounds of your temporary workspace.

8. Find a Forum ~ Perhaps the one thing that’s most easily missed in work at home jobs is the camaraderie of fellow employees. While you may enjoy the quiet allure of your home office, there will be times when you’ll want to discuss work-related issues, current events or even mindless reality shows with others just to make your day go a little faster. Unfortunately, most of your other friends and family members are working outside of the home, and can’t take time to engage in a little healthy procrastination with you. So, find an online forum or other social networking group of other work at home moms or self-employed individuals. Be careful not to spend too much time in these online venues, but it’s nice to have a place where you can drop in virtually 24/7 to chit chat, vent or get a little encouragement from others who understand what it’s like to work from home.

Use these tips as needed to create healthy balance and design a work at home atmosphere that works for you. For more tips on working from home, be sure to read our growing library of articles on the subject.

Guest Post: Misconceptions of Working From Home by Miranda Grimm

Working at home may not be what you expect. Although it may be an ideal fit for some, it takes a particular type of people to succeed at home.

It is very important work-at-home wannabes completely understand what it really means to work at home. Sometimes I get the impression the idea of a WAH career is clouded with glitter and music. While working at home has its many advantages, it is not always, what many expect. The following guide will help anyone thinking of turning down this path of home based work knows if it is genuinely for them.

Working from home means WORK

There have been a number of people approach me to help them get started working from home. As we go through the many options they have, I begin to realize they are becoming more and more dissatisfied by the fact they will actually have to work! Working at home often requires you to work harder than you would in a brick and mortar building! You will read more about this as you continue.

There is no job in cyberspace that will pay you a substantial amount of money while you turn on your computer, in your pajamas and play Farmville. Generally, the more money you expect to make, the more work you will have to do. If you are looking for a get rich quick scheme…please exit this page now…you will not find one here! And once you find this scheme and are required to have 100 people signed up by the end of the month…DO NOT come to me with your business ‘opportunity’. I am not interested and anyone looking for legitimate work should not be interested in any marketing schemes either. Expect to work!

Your Attention is Needed

While there are the random small jobs that allow you to do mindless work, if you are looking for substantial income, please realize your attention will be needed. You may sometimes need a babysitter, a spouse to watch the children or may have to use every minute of time you have while kids are sleeping to work. Even non-phone jobs that do not require background noise generally require you to be able to have some sort of concentration and focus to the task at hand. So either expect the rate at which you work to slow down substantially or choose to work when you are alone. The flexibility of working at home is the best part for most of us! However, it usually means the work I could have completed at a job-site in 8 hours, will now take a complete day in between caring for my children, house and husband.

You MUST Have Motivation

I think any WAHmer can agree with me here. The hardest thing about creating your own schedule is sticking to it! When you have no one to answer to but yourself, it is easy to let work sit or give up the shift you signed up for. Then when bills come due or those shoes you have been wanting go on sale, you feel like an idiot. We all have to work out our own ways of keeping up our motivation.

You Are Accountable For Yourself

Many work at home jobs hire agents as Independent Contractors versus Employees. This means you are responsible for your equipment (computer, phone, headset…), your quality of work, the amount of time spent and most importantly your TAXES. As an Independent Contractor, you may find yourself owing taxes come April! So be sure to get in touch with a professional accountant who can help you plan for the year and hold back a portion of each check.

Of course, there are many upsides to working at home, from the flexibility to not having a boss breathing down your neck. Some people simply need the structure of an on-site job. There is nothing wrong with that. I just hope before making any life changing choices you can look at yourself and decide if you have what it takes to depend solely on yourself!

How to Make Money Blogging

Curious moms often wonder how to make money blogging. See, work at home jobs for moms are not limited to the ones you find posted in our job leads. In fact, many of the best work at home jobs are those that moms are creating for themselves. One such job is blogging, which is an excellent way of making money online.

Blog is short for “web log” and entails writing about a particular subject and publishing these writings on the web. For some people, a blog is like an online journal and for others, it’s an online business. In fact, many businesses use blogs to talk about their products and services, and some businesses just hire bloggers (people who write blogs) to write about their businesses for them. Still, some simply advertise their business on other people’s blogs through banner ads or with a couple of lines of text featured on a blog’s sidelines, which, by the way, happens to be one of the best ways that moms make money blogging.

If you’re interested in becoming a mom blogger, know that no experience is necessary and that you can even start a blog today with no out of pocket cost to you. There is, however, a lot to learn if you intend to make money blogging and the following websites can help you learn the ropes:

Problogger

The Smart Passive Income Blog

Copyblogger

…and if you’re on Facebook, check out the Top Five Facebook Pages for Bloggers.

While there are other very prolific blogs and articles on the subject of how to make money blogging, these top sites about blogging are all you really need to get started. Each is authored by a professional blogger who is earning a full-time income online.

We also offer a series of business guides, which will help you learn how to profit from blogging. Our advice to you is to read, read, READ before attempting to make money blogging on your own. There is a lot to learn and do before you start making money online. You’ll save yourself a lot of wasted time and frustration if you study and do your homework first.

Need a Little Mad Money? We Can Help!

When I was a little girl, my grandma always told me to be sure I had a little mad money in my purse. To be certain I wasn’t without, she’d give me a few pennies to hold onto and she’d always include a dime just in case of emergency (yes, payphones really did exist once upon a time AND calls could be made for a thin dime!). As I grew into my teen years, Grandma’s mad money donations increased to $5 bills just in case I needed emergency cab fare or in case I wanted to “buy a pop”.

Later, I learned that the concept of mad money wasn’t just grandma’s excuse for  doling out cash, but it was her way of teaching me that a girl should always have a little spending money in her pocket.

Wiktionary.org sums it up pretty nicely:

A sum of money, often relatively small in amount, kept in reserve to use for impulsive, frivolous purposes; A sum of money kept in reserve or to insulate oneself financially in the event of the sudden breakdown of a relationship in which one is economically dependent.

Work at home jobs for moms can surely net you a comfortable salary, but if you find that your earnings are spread pretty thinly between bills, every day essentials and savings (you are saving, right?), then check out these ways of earning a little mad money on the side:

Fiverr, Zeerk and Fora20.com ~ All 3 sites are built around the same concept: trade favors for cash. You can post a task that you’ll perform or pick up a request for a task someone requests. Similar sites are popping up all over the web as people find them to be convenient ways of making mad money and getting things done! (Also, try Clickworker)

Sell an item on Craigslist ~ Craigslist is a good place for job leads, especially for work at home jobs for moms, but don’t forget that it’s also a mad money treasure trove. There, you can not only sell your own stuff for fast cash, but you can also pick up free stuff to resell there. Just look in the For Sale section of your local Craigslist site and you’ll notice a special sub-section marked Free. You have to move quickly when free items come up, because others are hawking that section too, but you can pick up some really cool items to relist for profit if you’re fast enough to be first in line for a good freebie.

Bidding Sites ~ We don’t advertise them in our job leads section, primarily because we prefer to bring you actual jobs, BUT this doesn’t mean that there isn’t real money (including mad money) to be made on these sites. If you’re between work at home jobs for moms, searching for a side-gig or even if you just want to earn a extra mad money, check out a few bidding sites like oDesk and Freelancer.com.

Do you make sure you keep a little mad money in your pocket at all times? What are some of the ways in which you separate it from your other income and do you have any favorite ways of earning mad money? If so, we’d love to hear your ideas in the comment section below.
